NMT 120

9 degrees is pretty cold and sliding down a huge chunk of ice is supa-cool. (check Top 40's Facebook)

Our pick this week come to us because the last song we heard on XM 44 (not anywhere as good as before the XM/Sirius merger, but still good) was the last song on this record. I had a copy of this and used to listen to it constantly in my early 20's. Really shows how good a live band they are and it captures their early energy. Not that they don't now, it's just you could move more and climb on shit higher when you're 22 than when you're 40 (LRHG, you know what I'm talking about).

This is originally from their second record, October, which is a bit weird, but is one of those records that grows on you (I don't own it, but someone I used to know did). The interesting fun fact about this record is; on the way to record it, someone stole the singer's brief case in Portland, OR. and it had all of his lyrics in it. SO, when they got to the studio, he had to re-write them all from memory, which adds to the obtuseness. The other factor is it was written at a time when three of the members were struggling with reconciling their faith with being rock stars and were thinking of quitting. During their induction in to the Hall of Fame, they told a story of how a band like theirs would never have made it in today's industry, because in their day you were given a chance to grow. As the singer said, "Can you imagine your second album -- the difficult second album -- it's about God?".

So, standing in line for the ICE thing at the Gaylord Palms resort, this song popped in my head and pretty much stayed there the whole time through the exhibit. I think it's the drum beat at the beginning, which is always fun to play.

So, from Dublin, Ireland:

U2 - Gloria

Bonus Tracks:

You love this show. Stop denying it. Nothing wrong with it.

Remember this song? Ain't nothing wrong with a little H&O.

It's Christmas. Quit stressing over have much you have for people and enjoy it. It's a chance to reset and blow off work for the rest of the year. The older you get, the quicker they go by. You never know how many of these you get, so don't waste one.

Our pick this week is a favorite of ours. We love them and if we don't, we should be ashamed of ourselves...more so than usual. They are just a good-time, fun rocking band with smart, but not overly dramatic lyrics (sort of a next generation Replacements) and I think we need more of that, these days to balance us out. Sometimes, it's just good to sit back and let it out. And yes, most of the songs are about drugs, but aren't they all. Fun times.

This one has a funny title. Sometimes, I enjoy funny titles.

So, once again, from Brooklyn (where all of Top 40's strikes come from), NY:

The Hold Steady - "Your little Hood-rat friend":

Bonus Tracks:

Man, Mormon house parties sure do get out of hand...

The pick this week was going to be the friggin cover of R.E.M.'s "Great Beyond" that I kept hearing in the grocery store, but then I found out it was The Fray and well, those guys are super pussies (they make Matchbox 20 look like they have hair on their balls), so I bagged that idea. However, looking that up, I found this. Fun times come from disappointing research.

How much mucus can one human being produce?

That's your legacy: not Heisman trophy winner, not SEC champion, not National Champion. No, you're the guy who CRIES every time he loses. Grow up. I've dated girls who didn't cry that much.

Our pick this week is from the somewhat entertaining, but mostly implausible movie Bride Wars. Not the worst movie in this genre, but you know, the ladies love it. (one funny scene involves the married lady looking at her sleeping husband and saying, "You're irritating me".) Plus, there are worse things you can do for 90 mins than look at Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson (who is starting to look more and more like her mother everyday).

This song appears at the beginning of the scene where Anne meets up with the Kate's (so I am told:super hot) brother. I think. Anyways, it was given the Top 40 seal of approval, which is rare. Well, rare for songs that don't make me want to run down the street stabbing puppies.

So, from, Nefyn, Wales:

Duffy - "I'm Scared":

Bonus Tracks:

It's proper name is actually: "Baba O'Riley". If you refer to it as "Teenage Wasteland", it's irritates people. Don't do it.

So, KG got upset cause we weren't recognizing the Dirty Souf enough. She said, "what about big ups to the ATL. Something that speaks to me and my peoples?"

Fine.

What kind of an asshole is immune to Morphine and can't sleep after NyQuil or Tylenol PM?

Our pick this week is an example of an album working as a whole rather than individual tracks. It did contain two of their big radio songs and they were two pitch perfect radio songs for the mid-eighties, but they really put something together here that works beginning to end. They had other albums that had some really good songs, but the rest were not that good or just forgettable.

Other than the two big radio songs (which you hear alot on classic radio) any of the other songs might not grab you on their own, but as a cohesive piece of work, it's great.

So from Bradford, Yorkshire, England:

The Cult - "Rain":

Bonus Tracks:

How you get from Bauhaus to this (with Tones on Tails in there somewhere) is beyond me, but there it is.

I Miss the 90's:

"They picked up where your precious Echo left off and you're bitching cause there's no more Echo albums...."

Jesus and Mary Chain - "Far out and Gone":

This Bride Wars movie is totally implausible, but it does entertain the ladies.

Our pick this week is a hidden gem, in my mind anyway. I think this song could have been a big, or at least a minor, hit had it been given a chance. Not that it matters. We've had this band on here before and she's been exempted from the anti-blonde rules on account of she's Swedish and can't help it (plus, I've seen her with black hair and it's hot).

The fun part of this song is that it could be directed at me from any of the girls I've dated (or dating). Well, from any girl I know, really (I'm a wee bit difficult at times). It's part of my charm. I'm sure all of your men fustrate you in his way from time to time. Well, except for LRHG. She found the one who doesn't do that.

So, from Jönköping, Sweden:

The Cardigans - "I need some fine wine and you, you need to be nicer":

Bonus Tracks:

See: Black Hair, hotness. And another, really good song.

It is that time of year. Enjoy and don't overdo it.
