NMT 55

Don't say the words, "Lyme Disease" to a Hypo.

Our pick this week comes by way of KG. She's stuck on this song and loves it more than chocolate, ice cream or chocolate ice cream. I told her to buy it when it was $5 on Amazon, but no one listen to Richard. It's only 7.99 now, so there's still time.

The band describes their sound as "baroque harmonic pop jams". Ah, artist types and their wacky ways. That basically means it's mostly a chill-out record. (Ironically, something KG doesn't have time for what with her busy schedule: Work, gym (every third even numbered Thursday), tennis, date with guy who will insist on going dutch after he picks the most expensive restaurant and then whips out a gift card for his half. Etc, etc...)

The song is fun and if you like clay, this video is for you.

So, from Seattle, WA (well, lookie there):

Fleet Foxes - "White Winter Hymnal":

Bonus tracks:

She gave me a card that played this song when I was sick and since she's been sick since Friday:

Mormon Girl and I have decided there's no shame in owning his Greatest Hits.

I Miss the 90's:

Oh, how many of you remember this song?

The Pursuit of Happiness - "Cigarette Dangles":

NMT 54

What up, Boulder?

A recent poll showed that 7% of the registered voters who answered their phones and didn't hang up are, so far, undecided. Who are these dumbasses? You haven't made up your mind yet? After all of this and you still don't know? Assholes. You're the same people I have to wait in line behind at McDonald's because you have to read the menu. Like they haven't had the same, awful tasting food for the last 50 years. Pick something already.

Our pick this week is honor of the Austin City Limits festival happening this weekend in...Is it Dallas? I think it's Dallas. Somewhere near there, I imagine. This is a big, three day festival they put on every year and R.E.M. played it a few years ago.

NO, it's in Austin, that's right. Little Red Haired Girl is going and she's got KG beat on the sweet hook-up: her boyfriend lives behind the park they use. This means that they can slip out and hit his place to cool off, get beer, pee in a clean bathroom (that's for her, he's a dude so he can pretty much do that anywhere, but it's useful if you have to drop a deuce.) and/or read the bible.

Should be a fun time and she's super excited. I think they said something about hitting the Red Eyed Fly afterwards for some beers. I think that's where she used to troll for dudes before she got all settled down and stuff. Happens to the best of us.

Anyway, I was looking at the list of bands playing (Foo Fighters, Beck, etc) and I saw this band listed and I had all but forgotten about them. They had a small hit on the radio with their first single (this song actually) and I kind of liked it, but we got their second record, North Ave. Wake-up call, and I used to put it in the playstack all the time. It was such a good record to work too. Oddly, I never bought it, but that's what happens; you wait for the promo to make it to the promo box and then someone else gets it and then you forget about it. This song isn't from that record. I couldn't find the song I wanted (it's called "Ferris Wheel". Look it up and give it a listen.), but this will do.

This week: Austin City Limits. Next week: Boulder Oxygen Fest

Oh and just as an aside:

Alison Krauss and Robert Plant
Band of Horses
The Swell Season (Once movie)
Coner Oberst (Bright Eyes)
Patty Griffin
Jenny Lewis
MGMT

All former New Music Tuesday picks. All Playing ACL.

From Chicago, IL:

Freddy Jones Band - "In a Daydream":

Bonus Tracks:

Because she likes this song and we (she) thinks it's the song they danced to at the wedding in GB, but we (she) aren't sure.

What's it like driving in Austin? Don't know, let's find out together.

Hmmm...I thought Atlanta had traffic...

I Miss the 90's:

I love this record. It's almost the perfect blend of pop sensibility; songs have good beats, some sing along choruses, but aren't, you know, cheesy. Again, one of those rare records you knew from the first listen you were hearing an album that you would still think was good 18 (yes, 18) years later. That's right, if you were born when this record came out, you are voting in your first election this year. I digress.

There are some wonderful moments on this record, but I think this might be my favorite. Now, "Enjoy the Silence" is one of their and probably on of the best songs ever written, for it's beauty and simplicity, but I mean from a stand point of it not being the first thing the average person would think of when it comes to this album. For some reason, I really enjoy the music and the lyrics of this song. I think it's the line: you wear guilt/like shackles on your feet/like a halo in reverse. I'm sure there's a literary term for it, but when you're 15 and no one loves you, you just know you like it.

Depeche Mode - "Halo":

Oh and this is one of Lynn's favorites. It was recorded for the same album, but not used. It ended up being used as a B-side for the single of World in my eyes. I remember Jenn ordered it for her to get this song. (I still the title and used it in a line of a poem I wrote once, but it's OK)

Depeche Mode - "Sea of Sin":

OH.MY.GOD,

So, this just might be the biggest week EVER! Not only is it Austin City Limits this weekend, but Thursday is the two hour premiere of Grey's and the one hour Office and tomorrow.....

SEX AND THE CITY ON DVD!!!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

They are even selling an extended cut, cause that movie just wasn't long enough.

(ok, I am happy about the Office and ACL is cool , but the other two I could do without.)

Oh and enjoy your Two hour Grey's cause next week it's being inturrupted by the Vice-Presidential debate. I can't decide which would be more boring. Well, at least the VP debate might have some drama.

NMT 53

Hey, kids, it's the one year anniversary of New Music Tuesday! Friggin' Sweet. Without fail, every Tuesday (eventually and except for the very first one, but that makes this the 52nd Tuesday in a row) for the last year, we've shared. Through vacations, surgeries, spark free break ups in movie parking lots, totally un-surprising Dear John Letters, LRHG's constant pestering, all of that, we've managed to do this every week. See: I can commit. Thank you for coming along and participating.

Our pick this anniversary week is a bit, eclectic I guess is the right word. I don't know, I've heard stranger. I think they get this label from the fact that they have a cello and a violin in their line up as opposed to the standard bass, drums guitar. Or it could the fact that they're weird artist types. Labels.

I like this, it's a little different, but not too much and you can dance to it. Not that I dance, but you may. They've also played SXSW the last two years, so I'm sure LRHG knows all about them, since she's hip and with it.

So, from Syracuse, NY:

Ra Ra Riot - "Dying is Fine":

Bonus Tracks:

I wanted to share with you a couple of the videos that sort of started this NMT idea. I found them and watched them a few times and wanted to share them and then when I realized that you could do that on this blogger thingy is when I decided to start it.I always meant to insert them in over the weeks, but I'm lazy and I forget and I tend to focus on the right now.

I already did one of hers last week, but in the interest of celebration I'll share these as well. So here they are with the original jokes I was going to use.

Oh man, PJ Harvey totally stole this outfit from Mormon Girl's closet. Yes. Don't question it.

PJ Harvey - "Whores hustle and the hustlers whore":

I think LRHG was at this show and was WICKED pissed when she saw PJ wearing the Exact. Same. Outfit. (seriously, this is one of her greatest songs and this version is solid)

I Miss the 90's:

Though I don't miss this. Some of you are big fans. Me: not so much. But, it's a year, so have fun.

NMT 52

We are here in Boston and having a splendid time. The leaves haven't quite started to turn and they're experiencing an Indian Summer, but it's just warm and not hot. We went up To Harvard and it was Sunny and near 80 so after a while in the sun it got hot, but we sat down in the shade at this nice little cafe and it was fine. Can't do that at home. We have pictures and will post them when we get back. (I'm writing this on Monday and we're heading to the Sox game shortly. The highlight of the trip if you ask me, but shhhh). Oh, and KG; We're handing out your number to any hot Boston guys we see, since we know that's what you prefer.

Ok, so I was thinking about this song the whole drive from Great Barrington to Boston as it mentions it in the second verse, and so was the the Turnpike/from Stockbridge to Boston. That is basically the trip we just took and it was lovely. Also, a lot of people really like this song and that makes sense. It's great.

From Boston, Massachusetts:

James Taylor - "Sweet Baby James":

Bonus Tracks:

In Honor of the Sox Game:

This song keeps popping up on the XM. We heard it three different times on three different channels on the way over to Great Barrington. Oddly, always from the same spot in the song.

I Miss the 90's:

Actually, I don't miss them this week. In fact, I don't really miss anything right now. Looking across the hotel room, I see I have everything I need.

Rock and Roll is not dead. In fact, it is very much alive and for now, it's name is My Morning Jacket. You all missed a great show. Even Top 40 loved it.

"I like this one. She gives it right back" - Shut up Mom!

Ok, our pick this week is from a suggestion from KG, so if it sucks, yell at her. I think I saw something on these guys once, looked them up and then forgot about it. Not for any bad reasons, just wasn't Tuesday so I forgot. I do that see. KG sent me a list last week of stuff she found from somewhere else. Anyway, they're fun and have a bit of a Strokes/Hate Bombs feel, but slightly more of a polish to it. Just a smidge. It's danceable, so get to it. Naked if you must, why should Mormon Girl be the only one.

From New York City, NY:

The Walkmen - "The Rat":

Bonus Tracks:

These guys were amazing live. The kind of band that if you didn't know anything about them and happened to see them, you would enjoy it. This song is on their latest album, "Evil Urges" and when I listened to the record the first time, I was at work and this song came on and I stopped what i was doing, started it over and listened to it twice. It's beautiful and has a great line, "When God gave us mirrors/he had no idea"

My Morning Jacket - "Librarian":

One of Top 40's favoritist songs evah:

I Miss the 90's:

I love an artist that will try new things and evolve. When they take chances. I like this girl a lot. She's very powerful, she's an amazing musician and isn't afraid to change things. If you listen to her records, they all sound different. Not radically, but there's enough of a difference that you can tell which era and album it is from (the first two may be an exception, but they were recorded very close together). She's was known for her guitar work on her first two records, then went away from the guitar work on the third, went back and then on her last album, she played only piano-and she never played piano before. That's taking a risk and trying something new. You could just put out the same tried and true formula, but there's no fun in that. Doesn't work for everyone and that's ok. This performance is of a song from her second record and I love when she ends the song. She just has this look of confidence, like I just had 40k people eating out of my hand and I'm awesome. Plus she looks really good in this clip.

PJ Harvey - "Rid of Me":
