NMT 46

Seriously?
Seriously!

(If you watch that stupid show, that will probably make sense)

Our pick this week is a leftover form a great record. Wouldn't fit in with the overall feel of the record, but I hope they put it out on something, cause I like it. And this is the most important thing.

The video was filmed somewhere in Athens for a French blog for a series they call, "Takeaway shows". I haven't checked out what else they have yet, but I'm lazy, so don't be like me. I've been waiting for someone to post it and alas, it has happened.

Anyways, from Athens, GA:

R.E.M. - "On the Fly":

Bonus Tracks:

Another new R.E.M. video for LRHG to hate:

R.E.M. - "Man-Sized Wreath":

I Miss the 90's:

So, all the kids today, that guy from Fall Out Boy, MCR and, probably one of the Jonas Brothers, wearing Guy Liner. Been done boys. So, let's paint it on and stare at the floor. Lynn, break out the black and white striped tights for the good 'ol days!

Sisters of Mercy - "More":

Uh, oh yeah...

So, raise your hand if you forgot Marisa Tomei was on "A Different World".

NMT 45

I was thinking about that email that's been floating around. I think it says something like you know the world is screwed up when Germany doesn't, want to go to war, the best rapper is white and Richard has a girlfriend. Something like that. I'm not so if that's true. (The rapper part, not the Germany going to war-they got their asses kicked in two big ones, I think they're good for now or the Richard has a girlfriend part-I am very lucky to have one, even if I don't earn it every day).

Anyway, I'm not so sure that Eminem is the best rapper. I don't really know enough to have an in depth discussion about it, but if I had an uneducated, low information vote (and I'm an American, so that's really the only kind of vote I have) I would probably vote for our pick this week.

Rapping is a lot like singing in that you have to have a voice for it. It's not just bad poetry over a drum solo. I like this guy's flow and the way he phrases his lyrics. Don't get me wrong, I like Eminem as much as the next angry, white suburban white guy living in a southern shithole, but he's working through some issues and sometimes you have to be in the mood for that. He is funnier though.

So, I heard this song on the DJ Danger Mouse "The Grey Album" record. DJ Danger Mouse is a producer and the white guy in Gnarls Barkley. He did a mash-up record where he took the Acapella (no music-just voice)version of the Black Album and used samples from the Beatles White album (hence grey album....get it? Clever..). I know, but it works and it's fun.

As I said, I'm sure if he's better, but I like it. I like his lyrics and his phrasing, the way he puts things together. I hear it comes from reading the dictionary over and over as a kid. Whatever, it's good.

So, from Brooklyn, NY:

Jay-Z - "December 4th": (Not the Grey Album version):

Bonus Tracks:

Hey, look what happened today! The return of the Pasty white, emaciated British singer guy. Guess some chicks are into that. Especially, barefoot, shirtless and in jeans. I don't know.

The Verve - "Love is Noise":

I Miss the 90's:

Well, in honor of that fact. Let's have some more pasty white guys. But back when they did drugs and were cool. Let's take the loud, layered guitars of American music, but give you a beat to dance to. So, let's do it, turn it up real loud, stand up, take your clothes off (Mormon Girl is already ahead of us) and dance like no one is watching. (Cause probably no one is.)

The Verve - "Blue":

NMT 44

Our pick this week is older, but I was thinking about it and I wanted to share. He was the singer and guitar player in the 80's indie band, Husker Du (he had a great quote about the name. When he was being interviewed for his first solo album. He said, "It's Swedish for 'do you remember', which is all it means now". Just thought that was cool).

Anyway, I always enjoyed his first solo record, "Workbook" (I couldn't find anything from that record, other than "See a little light", but since it's been used in a recent commercial, I couldn't bring myself to use it. Great song though) great guitar work and melodic songs, little softer than the Husker Du songs. The song I chose comes from his second album, "Black Sheets of Rain" which is a little harder than "Workbook", but that just means he uses a distortion pedal.

Point being; pop music isn't limited to silly boys in matching outfits.

So, from Minneapolis, MN (no, not him):

Bob Mould - "It's too late":

Bonus Tracks:

This came out today. Sounded interesting.

The Hold Steady - "Sequestered in Memphis":

I Miss The 90's:

It started out as a way for friends to come together and grieve for their lost friend. It started as two songs and grew into an album, a tribute for a fallen friend. The album was recorded while Mother Love Bone was searching for a replacement for Andy Wood. They found Eddie Vedder and changed their name to Pearl Jam. Hence, he's on this record. It amazes me how many people you wouldn't think would like this song actually do. Mormon Girl even likes it. Possibly even KG, if she's not being a music snob that day. Oh, interesting fun fact: When Vedder is singing, this is the exact lineup of Pearl Jam now. Dig on that.

Temple of the Dog - "Hunger Strike":

Gift

Want do you want for your Birthday, Richard?

This

Just kidding. I'm only including this because it's on my street and I know girls like to look in other peoples houses.

Touchy

Man, guess this wasn't as funny to them as it was to us....

SALT LAKE CITY - The creator of a calendar that featured shirtless Mormon missionaries was excommunicated Sunday after a disciplinary meeting with local church leaders in Las Vegas.

Chad Hardy said he bears no ill will toward the council of elders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"I felt like I spoke my truth," the 31-year-old entertainment entrepreneur said. "Bottom-line, they still felt the calendar is inappropriate and not the image that the church wants to have."

Some of the 12 models have also been called to disciplinary meetings, but none were punished.

Outing

Ok, so the big plan is to head out next Saturday the 19th, for food, film and old folks trying to stay awake past 11pm. My birthday is the 20th, but that is totally irrelevant since this is mostly about going to see this:

Oh and there's supposedly going to a Harry Potter trailer on the front of it, but I'm sure there will be ads for good movies too.

NMT 43

I'm not sure where I heard about our pick this week, probably on a website or something, but I checked it out and I like it.It has a very 80's, electro-dance feel to it (which will make Lynn happy), but doesn't sound dated.

Like I said, I don't know anything about it, but it is good. So, if you miss good old-fashioned 80's dance music, and I know we all do, this might be for you.

So, from Sydney, Australia:

The Presets - "This Boy's in Love":

Bonus Tracks:

I really don't know what this is, but KG said it's her new all-time favorite and anyone who disagrees with her with get one in the yarbles. She will take all challengers. (Seriously, I don't know where she found this, but she lives in the Big City with Big City Radio).

MGMT - "Time to Pretend":

I Miss the 90's:

I saw these guys at the Station in 1994. The Spinanes opened. It's weird, because this shouldn't work. He can't really sing, but there is something about it. When I put this record on the first time, it pulled me in straight away. I couldn't put my finger on exactly why, but I just wanted to hear it again, right away. It's still good and I still enjoy it. They are also the subject of my favorite T-shirt, which I am not allowed to wear anymore. Oh and the tour I saw them for was for Gentleman, the album before this one. That was a good show and I totally got stalked. This is from their album "Black Love". Much goodness.

The Afghan Whigs - "Honky's Ladder":

Been a long time since I was this excited about a new Bond movie. Thank you to whomever for reviving this franchise.

Technically; all chaps are ass-less.

Just to mention it:

Today's special: We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things by Jason Mraz. Everyday Low price: $8.99 Today's price: $3.99

Our pick this week found on the special deal of the day for Friday. $2.99, took a chance and it worked out well. I had only vaguely heard of this band and I'm not even sure where, but after listening to a preview of some of the songs, I decided to buy it.

I believe they're part of the Low-fi movement the kids have going on right now. Sort of like the Shins and the like, where it's all about good songs and limited production. Basically, just music and a mike. It's good times.

I found a video for this song, which is the main song that has my attention right now. It has a great line in it (the quote in the page heading up there), that just grabbed me and held on.

They have a few songs and about ships and sailing, but I think that may be because they're from the Pacific Northwest (ahem), but the lyrics are good, the melodies pleasing, just all around goodness. No cognitive dissonance here.

So, from Portland, OR:

The Decemberists - "The Engine Driver":

Bonus Tracks:

Oh my Shiva, I thought it was all a joke...:

I Miss the 90's:

So, you hop in to your kick ass Blue GMC truck or your sweet two-door Cavalier or whatever and you need a song to drive to. Something that will make you want to drive fast and get home in about 3.5 seconds and the video for that song needs to have the band walking around the woods in flannel. Got it. There's a reason this song is on every driving video game ever.

Soundgarden - "Rusty Cage":
