NMT 98

Raise your hand if you and your husband have a nice, new bathroom to stink up.

Our pick this week is apparently the house band somewhere in Atlanta. Our they just play there alot. I've always liked this band, but for some reason I only have a couple of their records. They had a big hit on their first record, but for some reason they never maintained their level of popularity and it seems they've always put out high quality material. Just one of those weird things that proves most people wouldn't know quality if it sat on their lap and told them what they wanted for Christmas. (oh and they're KG's current obsession).

So, from Baton Rouge, LA:

Better Than Ezra - "Absolutely Still":

Bonus Tracks:

Here's another Atlanta regular. I got to meet this guy and his band when they were on tour for their first record. The label set up a dinner for some of us before the show and they were really cool guys. KG's also seen him perform 1400 times.

I Miss the 90's:

One day, this will happen to one of you. Unless you're kitchen just has cold, hard Mexican ceramic tile. These guys played the same show I saw Tonic at.

K's Choice - "Breakfast":

I felt slightly bad about watching TV while she did my dishes, but then I remembered she does the same thing while I mow her yard.

Our pick this week has been here before. It's a side project for the singer (though, I'm not sure her main project is doing much, so that may be semantics). She teamed up with the guy from Sparklehorse (actually, no idea except I had a promo tape from them when I worked at the store and never listened to it) to do some nice, little pop songs. I just bought this record a few weeks ago as an Amazon mp3 daily deal and keep forgetting about it (not a knock by any means, I'm just lazy and have a shorter attention span than Mormon Girl). I suspect I'll listen to it tomorrow while I'm working and NOT going to the pool for a forth straight day like someone else....(teachers are friggin lazy).

I like this song, but mostly I like the title. Plus, she's really cute as I mentioned before. (and Swedish, so can't really help the blonde thing. the rest of you can.)

So, from Örebro, Närke, Sweden:

A Camp - "Stronger Than Jesus":

Bonus Tracks:

We need some culture here. Probably, the single most influential record of all time. Just a beautiful melody, especially the line that starts about 31 seconds in. Kills me. Oh and if you're in to that sort of thing, it's really good to put on while, um, reading the bible....

I Miss the 90's:

You ever just get an odd song stuck in your head. Not like Collective Soul odd, but an odd song from a good band. Of all the songs by this band this got stuck in there today. No idea.

Science, woo!

That "Eat this, not that' apparently lists foods to help increase your sex drive and improve your love life. One of the "hot" foods:

Chocolate covered strawberries

Hot! This sexy combo isn't just a Valentine's Day gimmick. The phenyl ethylamine in chocolate releases the same hormone released during sex, and strawberries contain vitamin C, which helps libido. Plus, Italian researchers found that women who often eat chocolate have a higher sex drive than those who don't. Just make sure the chocolate you're using has at least 60 percent cacao for the maximum benefit.

Well, duh! Hence, some women substitute chocolate for sex.

And this oddity:

Half a bottle of wine
Not! One glass will take the edge off and cause your blood vessels to relax, but more than that will reverse the effects, and impede your arousal.

Um, LRHG, Top 40 and Amanda would like to dispute the research in the above example. (KG's more of an Alabama Slamma' kind of girl-holy shit I don't even know what that is, but it sounds really funny. Go ahead say it out loud, I'll wait.........see. Funny.)

Ok, I get it if you're an actress or trying to be in a public position, then I understand the fake boobs. But, when you're a Legal Secretary, for a governmental litigation firm (little or no courtroom action) in a out of the way shithole town: that's just a chasm of insecurity no amount of silicone can fill. Nice lady though.

Our pick this week is a little odd. Well, odd in the fact that it's older, but I wanted to talk about something. I was in Publix today and as I was checking out, I heard a cover of this song in the store. Instantly recognizable and I think it was by Jesse Malin. Not sure who that is, but it's unimportant.

This is one of my favorite songs and is a classic. It's something my dad would have listened too (that's not a negative) and it reminds me of when I was Ben's age. When I heard the cover version it struck me because it was sort of a country-rock rendition and it totally lacked any of the soul and passion of the original. Now, I'm not one to think the cover should be a spot on of the original, that's not the point, but at least have something behind it. It's very, I don't know, flat. Listening to a sample of it, I think it's the drums (there are none on the original) they just sort of make it plod along.

It really has that whole (new) Country music plastic feel to it. I don't think he's even that type of artist and he may be very good otherwise, but his version of this didn't do it for me. Get on iTunes or whatever and listen to it. You'll see.

So, here's the original in all it's passionate glory. Also, this song also reminds you of how different things were. Phone calls haven't been a dime for a thousand years and when was the last time you actually saw a phone booth, much less someone using one. Plus, I think we've all been like this (Not LRHG, but the rest of us) where we've tried to play it off, I'm over it, I was never in love with them, etc, but everyone else sees right through your bullshit. Even you.

So, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (I knew something good had to come out of there):

Jim Croce - "Operator (that's not the way it feels):

Bonus Tracks:

This comes out a week from today, but I feel like listening to it today.

Our Lady Peace - "All you did was save my life":

I know, not any of yours' favorite, but I do enjoy her and find her physically appealing in a strange sort of way. And bouncy houses are always fun.

PJ Harvey - "Black Hearted Love":

Our pick this week is new to me as well. I read about them in a magazine and it sounded interesting and I liked the name for some reason. It's got an almost experimental vibe, but stays cohesive enough to be listenable. And it's kind of catchy. Let's learn about it together. Learning is fun.

So, from Brooklyn, NY:

Dirty Projectors - "Stillness is the Move":

Bonus Tracks:

Yes, he's always danced like that. Don't ask, cause sometimes, it's just about trains. Or a statue.

This band has 1 or 3 good moments. This is one of them.
