Rascal Flatts should name every album, "Cavity", cause their songs are just so sugary sweet. And by that I mean; they suck ass. Oh and appaeratnly the Julianne broad from Dancing with the stars is hot. Eh. She's fake blonde and we all now how much I love that. Plus, she's fake blonde and Mormon, so she's trouble...
Our pick this week is not starting a theme, I swear. Combined with last week it could seem that way, but trust me tis not. I watched the movie Control last week. Quite good, actually. It was directed by Anton Corbijn, the photohrapher who has taken most of the great rock photo's you see today. All the u2 and Depeche Mode stuff is him. All the sepia toned things. Really, great stuff.
The movie is a biopic about Ian Curtis, the singer for this band. It's based on the book written by his wife, so it really focus' on Ian, but his story is really the story of the band. While only together for two years and two albums, they became a huge influence in the indie rock world and many of your favorite bands (u2) cite them as their biggest influence.
Anyway, let me 'splain, no there is too much, let me sum up; while touring for their first album and writing their second, Ian has an affair, which led to this song. Which is quite brilliant actually. He developed epilepsy after joining the band and suffered from seizeurs, which probably dropped him deeper into depression.
He became torn between the two women in his life and the pull of the sucesses his band was starting to have. Their second record, Closer, has some of the most beautiful and haunting lyrics I've ever heard.
I"m not sure, but I think that while making this video or so, but near the end I know, Anton took this photo of Ian. I think it tells the whole story of everything, ever:

Shortly after this picture was taken and 2 days before the band was set to leave for America for the first time and a few months before the Closer album came out, Ian hung himself in his home.
He was 23.
The rest of the band would continue on as New Order.
This was Joy Division's current single at the time of Ian's death. If you've ever been in a club on an 80's night, you've heard this song. It's the inscription his wife put on his headstone.

So, LRHG and I were talking about this song and she said it was pretty much how her college carrer went. That it was all like this, at least the parts she can remember. She was lamneting how she can't really hang like this anymore, but she could if she really, really needed to. (the preceeding totally happened. For reals. Don't question it.) Oh and it's totally the new BYU fight song.
It looked like a fun party, but I didn't see any pudding. Just saying.
You know if you ask about it, it will show up (no idea what this is):

5 Comments:
1. Even I think Julianne is hot.
2. I wish I would have known that story when I was rocking out to that song back in college.
3. Wait, maybe I DID know that story in college - I just don't remember it.
4. You have almost redeemed yourself for #3 with this song. For whoever asked for it - the entire CD is really good, too.
PS. You wish!!!
1) Julianne IS hot. No doubt about it. Look, I'm fake blonde but everything else about me is real and you love me...So, you can Love Julianne, too. PS - the outfit she wore on Monday night, smoking hot (if only I could look half as good wearing something like that)
2) I'm with ya LRHG, had no idea of the story behind this song but it's long been a favorite song of mine throughout the years.
3) I get a laugh out of this song everytime I hear it.
4) Matt Nathanson is very good however, as is typical with Atlanta radio, they overplay songs way too much!
PS - Check out Thriving Ivory, "Angels on the Moon" - good tune and for some weird reason, I can't stop listening to The White Tie Affair, "Candle (Sick and Tired)"
